A London Cut at a Hundred Degrees

Sinclair solved the tropics in 1962. Dallas asks him the same question every August.

A man in Dallas does not spend his summer outdoors. He spends it in a series of cold rooms, connected by ninety seconds of blinding heat. The garage. The walk across the lot. The lobby, twenty degrees cooler than the sidewalk. By evening he has crossed that threshold six or eight times, and the suit he put on at seven in the morning has been asked to do something no English tailor of the last century ever designed for.

This is the actual problem. Not the hundred degrees. The transition. A cloth that merely survives heat is not enough. It has to recover, repeatedly, on a schedule, without looking as though it has been through anything.

The instinct is to reach for the lightest cloth in the book. It is almost always the wrong instinct, and understanding why is the beginning of dressing well in this city.

The Yarn, Not the Weight

Weight tells you how much wool is in a metre of cloth. It tells you very little about how that cloth behaves in heat.

What matters is the twist. A high-twist yarn is spun with far more turns per inch than an ordinary worsted, which makes it harder, springier, and more tightly bound. Woven, those yarns hold each other at a distance rather than settling together. The result is a cloth that is dense in the hand and open to the air, porous in a way that a soft, fine cloth never is.

This is why a twelve-ounce fresco will carry a man through a Texas August more comfortably than an eight-ounce super 150s. The fresco is heavier and it is also cooler, because air moves through it. The finer cloth is lighter and warmer, because its fibres pack tight and the weave closes up. Weight and warmth are not the same axis. Almost everyone assumes they are.

The high-twist yarn does something else, too. It resists creasing, and more importantly it recovers from creasing. Sit through a two-hour lunch in a soft worsted and you stand up wearing the chair. Sit in a high-twist and the cloth springs back on the walk to the car. Over a long day of getting in and out of vehicles, that recovery is worth more than any other single property.

Super numbers work against you here. The number describes the fineness of the fibre, and fineness is genuinely a luxury. A super 150s feels extraordinary in the hand. It is also weaker, less resilient, quicker to shine at the elbow and seat, and less able to hold a shape through a humid afternoon. A man buying a suit for Dallas summers who asks for the highest number in the book has bought the wrong thing well. A super 110s in a hard finish will outlast it by years and look better in the fourth hour.

Mohair deserves its reputation. The fibre comes from the Angora goat and is smooth where wool is scaled, which gives it both its faint lustre and its spring. Blended with wool, it produces a cloth that breathes, refuses to crease, and holds a line through an evening. It became the dinner-suit cloth for good reason, and in a climate like this one the reason is practical before it is aesthetic.

Linen is honest about what it is. It conducts heat away from the body better than anything else you can wear and it wrinkles within the hour, permanently, all summer. It is an excellent cloth for a man who has decided in advance not to mind. It is a poor cloth for a man who will spend the day minding.

The Parts You Don't See

Cloth is half the answer. The other half is inside the jacket, where nobody looks.

A canvassed coat has a layer of horsehair and wool floating between the cloth and the lining, shaped by the tailor and held with stitching. A fused coat has that structure glued on. Fusing is cheaper, faster, and perfectly serviceable in a mild climate. In heat and humidity, over years, adhesive fails, and when it fails you see it as faint bubbling across the chest and lapel, which no alteration can repair. Dallas is one of the places where that distinction stops being theoretical.

Lining is the other lever. A fully lined jacket carries a second layer of cloth across the back and body, which is warmth you did not ask for. Half-lining takes it out of the lower back. Quarter-lining takes out more. The trade is structure and drape against airflow, and in this climate the trade is usually worth making, provided the cloth has enough body to hang properly without support. That is another argument for the harder finishes.

The trousers are where men actually suffer, and where they think about it least. The jacket comes off at the desk. The trousers do not. An unlined trouser in a high-twist cloth is the single most underrated improvement available to a man who works here.

Small things compound. A lighter shoulder with less padding. Cupro lining rather than polyester, which breathes and costs almost nothing extra. A slightly higher armhole, counterintuitively, because it lets the jacket move with the arm instead of dragging the whole coat across the shoulders every time you reach for a door.

None of this is a new problem, and it was not solved in Texas.

When Anthony Sinclair began cutting for Sean Connery, the films required a London tailor's work to hold up in Jamaica, in Turkey, in the Bahamas. British tailoring at the time ran heavy. It was cut for a country with a genuine winter and no air conditioning. Sinclair moved toward lighter cloths and a softer, less rigid construction, and the pared-down silhouette that resulted became the Conduit Cut. The look reads as restraint. It began, at least partly, as a technical answer to a climate problem.

It is worth being accurate about the scale of it. Those suits were lightweight by the standards of English tailoring in 1962, which is not what the phrase means now. The Italians would take the idea considerably further in the decades after. Sinclair's achievement was not inventing the light suit. It was refusing to let a London cut become a tropical compromise. He kept the shoulder, the drape, and the line intact while changing everything underneath.

That is the same problem, stated exactly, that a Dallas wardrobe presents. Not how to escape the heat by dressing down, but how to keep the discipline of a proper cut while making it survivable in a place that reaches a hundred degrees for two months a year.

The answer is not a lighter suit. It is a harder yarn, an opener weave, less structure where structure is only weight, and real canvas where the garment needs to hold its shape for a decade. Chosen that way, a suit does not merely tolerate August. It is unbothered by it, which is the whole point. The man wearing it should be the only one who knows what the cloth is doing.
